PREMIUM ZEN CHASEN

Application & Preparation

For an optimal matcha ritual, the bamboo whisk (chasen) should be briefly placed in warm water before each use. This makes the fine ribs more flexible and prevents them from breaking when whisked.

The matcha is then whisked with the chasen using quick, loose Z-movements. The whisk should be guided lightly, without applying strong pressure to the bottom of the bowl. The more even and faster the movement, the finer and creamier the matcha foam will be.

The chashaku is used for the precise measurement of matcha powder. A typical serving usually uses about two spoonfuls.

Traditional manufacturing

The black bamboo (Purple bamboo) reaches a diameter of approximately 2–3 cm and a height of 3–5 metersIts characteristic dark color develops naturally: After about 8 months, the stalks begin to darken, and after about 2 years they take on their typical color. black-violet coloration to.

Elaborate handwork:

  1. Selection and cutting of suitable bamboo pieces
  2. Removal of the inner material
  3. The solid outer skin becomes 70 fine struts worked out
  4. Fixation by means of a stabilizing thread
  5. Precise shaping for optimal flexibility

This traditional processing method creates a robust, dimensionally stable chasen, on whose smooth surface fine matcha powder hardly settles.

FAQs

How does the dark chasen differ from the golden chasen?

Both versions work on the same principle and produce creamy foam.

The difference lies primarily in:

  • Appearance (light vs. dark bamboo)
  • Feel (black bamboo feels somewhat firmer, is light in the hand, is more delicate)
  • Design preference

Is the dark matcha whisk also suitable for beginners?

Yes. The dark matcha whisk is particularly light in the hand and allows for controlled guidance during the Z-movement.

It is suitable for both beginners and experienced matcha drinkers who value design and traditional quality.

What is so special about black bamboo?

Black bamboo – also known as Purple bamboo It is known – its dark, black-violet color only develops over time. After about 8 months, the stalk begins to change color, and after about 2 years it reaches its characteristic depth.

This natural coloring makes each chasen unique. At the same time, black bamboo is considered particularly strong and is traditionally used for high-quality bamboo crafts.

Why is bamboo that is at least 2 years old used?

Only bamboo that has matured for at least two years is used in the production process.

Younger bamboo would be too soft and less dimensionally stable. The maturation period ensures:

  • higher resistance
  • improved elasticity of the struts
  • longer durability of the chasen
  • uniform foam formation

This ensures your matcha whisk remains reliable and robust even with regular use.

How long does a chasen last?

With proper care, several months to over a year.

Preparation: Soak the broom in water for a few minutes before use to soften the bamboo and prevent the ribs from breaking.

Foaming: Put your matcha powder and water into the bowl and quickly move the chasen in a Z or W shape – do not stir, but whisk until frothy.

Result: A velvety, even foam and an intense taste experience.
