Basics of Matcha

What is Matcha?

Matcha is a finely ground powder made from green tea leaves. Unlike other types of tea, the leaves are not simply brewed but consumed whole. This makes matcha particularly rich in nutrients.

Why is matcha so special?

Matcha represents harmony, tranquility, and enjoyment. It combines the beneficial properties of green tea with the Japanese tea ceremony tradition, offering an incomparable taste experience.

How is matcha different from regular green tea?

Matcha is made from the best leaves of the first harvest and is particularly rich in chlorophyll and L-Theanine. Consuming the whole leaf provides greater nutrient density.

Is matcha suitable for children and pregnant women?

Due to the caffeine content, children and pregnant women should only consume matcha in moderation or after consulting a doctor.

How much caffeine does matcha contain?

Matcha is known for its natural caffeine content, which varies depending on the quality:

Our Ceremonial Matcha Contains 3290 mg of caffeine per 100 g and offers the highest quality, ideal for the traditional tea ceremony.

Our Traditional Matcha provides 2950 mg of caffeine per 100 g and is perfect for daily consumption.

Thanks to the natural caffeine in matcha, energy absorption is slower and more sustained than with coffee. This provides a long-lasting, clear energy boost – without the typical side effects like jitters.

Is matcha healthier than coffee?

In addition to caffeine, matcha provides a variety of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that coffee doesn't. Furthermore, matcha's energy boost is longer-lasting and gentler. In the blog article Matcha vs. Coffee you will find all the differences listed.

Is matcha vegan and gluten-free?

Yes, our matcha is both vegan and gluten-free.

Preparation and use

How do I prepare matcha traditionally?
  1. Put 1–2 grams of matcha into a matcha bowl (chawan).
  2. Add about 30 ml of 80°C warm water.
  3. Whisk the matcha with a bamboo whisk (chasen) in Z-shaped movements until a fine foam forms.
  4. Add more water and enjoy the tea neat.

Here you will find detailed instructions with tips and tricks: Matcha preparation - this is how it works

Can I make matcha without a whisk?

Yes, a milk frother or a hand mixer can be an alternative. However, for the best results, we recommend a traditional Chasen.

How do I make a matcha latte?

Prepare the matcha as usual and pour over steamed plant-based or dairy-free milk. Optionally, add a sweetener like maple syrup.

To the recipe

Which milk is best for matcha latte?

Plant-based barista milks like oat or soy milk provide a creamy flavor and foam particularly well. Of course, you can also use animal milk.

Can I prepare matcha cold?

Prepare the matcha as usual, but then add ice cubes. Matcha tastes particularly good cold as Iced Vanilla Matcha Latte or Iced Raspberry Matcha LatteMatcha is also excellent in cold drinks such as Smoothies, or use matcha mocktails. Simply mix matcha with cold water and blend with the juice, adding as desired.

Can I also use matcha for cooking?

Yes, Matcha is versatile and can be used in recipes such as Matcha Spinach Tortillas, Salad dressings or used as a spice in savory dishes such as Matcha Hummus or Lime Matcha Curry.

What creative desserts can I make with matcha?

Matcha is ideal for Matcha cinnamon rolls, Matcha cookies or Matcha tiramisu and adds a unique flavor. You'll find many great recipes in our recipe directory, and we're constantly adding more, so it's worth checking out! Find all the recipes here: All Matcha Recipes

Quality and origin

How do I recognize high-quality matcha?

High-quality matcha has a bright green color, a powdery texture, and a fresh, slightly sweet aroma. Matcha from the Uji region of Japan is considered particularly high-quality. We've extensively explored the differences in matcha quality in our blog; you can find the article here: Matcha quality differences

Where does Health Bar's matcha come from?

Our matcha comes from the Uji region, a traditional tea-growing region in Japan. The farms rely on sustainable, pesticide-free cultivation. You can find all information about our farm on our About Page.

Why is organic matcha important?

Organic matcha is subject to strict controls and guarantees high quality without harmful pesticide or heavy metal residues. In this blog post, we explored matcha and its contaminants: To the blog article

What types of tea (cultivars) are available for matcha, and how do they influence the taste?

There are various cultivars, such as Yabukita, Okumidori, Samidori, Saemidori, and Gokou. Each variety has its own flavor profile, ranging from mild and sweet to intense umami. You can find explanations of the individual cultivars here: Cultivar

How is matcha made?

The production process involves several steps: shade cultivation (oishitaen), harvesting (chatsumi), steaming (mushi), separation of stems and leaves (senbetsu), grinding into powder (funsai), and final testing (kensa). Each phase contributes to the high quality of the final product. More information

Why is matcha from Uji considered particularly high quality?

The Uji region offers optimal growing conditions with nutrient-rich soils, clean water, and an ideal climate. Traditional methods such as shade cultivation guarantee the highest quality.

Why is shade cultivation so important for matcha?

Shade cultivation increases the content of chlorophyll and L-Theanine, which results in a more intense green color and an umami-rich flavor. More information

How is the quality of matcha tested?

Each batch of matcha is tested for color, texture, taste, and contaminants to ensure the highest quality.

Storage and shelf life

How long does matcha last?

Unopened matcha stays fresh for up to 18 months. Once opened, it should be consumed within 4–6 months. The individual best-before date can be found on the packaging.
We have compiled everything important about this in a blog article here: Shelf life of matcha

How do I store matcha properly?

Store matcha in an airtight container, away from light, in a cool place, such as the refrigerator. Also, make sure the product is not exposed to moisture. More information

Sustainability and Ethics

How sustainable is matcha cultivation?

Our matcha is grown in high-quality organic quality, entirely without the use of pesticides. Some of the packaging is recyclable, and our tea farm places great emphasis on resource-conserving harvesting methods. A special feature is that as many steps as possible are performed by hand to minimize energy consumption. Furthermore, the entire harvest is used, creating no waste. This ensures that our matcha is not only high-quality but also produced as sustainably as possible.

What happens to the leftover tea leaves after matcha production?

All unused parts of the tea leaves are further processed, e.g. Sencha or Hojicha

Does matcha contain harmful substances, and how can I ensure my matcha is safe?

Our matcha is regularly tested for contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, and radioactivity. Organically certified matcha significantly reduces the risk of residues. See the current lab report: Matcha and its harmful substances

Why is it important to choose matcha without pesticides?

Since matcha is made from whole leaves, any residue is also consumed. Pesticide-free organic cultivation guarantees the highest purity and quality.

How is matcha's carbon footprint reduced?

Health Bar relies on sustainable farming, recyclable packaging, and tree donations to minimize its carbon footprint.

Practical tips

How often can I drink matcha?

1-2 cups per day are enough to enjoy the health benefits of matcha without consuming too much caffeine.

How do I know if matcha has expired?

Can I freeze matcha?

Yes, you can freeze matcha for longer shelf life. Make sure it's in an airtight container.
