Basics of Matcha
What is Matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground powder made from the leaves of green tea. Unlike other types of tea, the leaves are not just brewed but consumed in their entirety. This makes Matcha particularly rich in nutrients.
Why is Matcha so special?
Matcha stands for harmony, tranquility, and enjoyment. It combines the positive qualities of green teas with the tradition of the Japanese tea ceremony and offers an unparalleled taste experience.
How does Matcha differ from regular green tea?
Matcha is made from the best leaves of the first harvest and is particularly rich in chlorophyll and L-theanine due to shade cultivation. Consuming the whole leaf provides a higher nutrient density.
Is Matcha suitable for children and pregnant women?
Due to the caffeine content, children and pregnant women should consume Matcha only in moderation or after consulting a doctor.
How much caffeine does Matcha contain?
Matcha is known for its natural caffeine content, which varies depending on quality:
Our Ceremonial Matcha contains 3290 mg of caffeine per 100 g and offers the highest quality, ideal for the traditional tea ceremony.
Our Traditional Matcha provides 2950 mg of caffeine per 100 g and is perfect for daily enjoyment.
Thanks to the natural caffeine in Matcha, energy absorption occurs more slowly and sustainably than with coffee. This provides a long-lasting, clear energy boost – without the typical side effects like nervousness.
Is Matcha healthier than coffee?
Matcha provides a variety of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that coffee does not offer, in addition to caffeine. Moreover, the energy boost from Matcha is longer-lasting and gentler. In the blog article Matcha vs. Coffee you will find all the differences listed.
Is Matcha vegan and gluten-free?
Yes, our Matcha is both vegan and gluten-free.
Preparation and Use
How do I prepare Matcha traditionally?
- Add 1–2 grams of Matcha to a Matcha bowl (Chawan).
- Add about 30 ml of water at 80°C.
- Whisk the Matcha with a bamboo whisk (chasen) in Z-shaped movements until a fine foam forms.
- Add more water and enjoy the tea plain.
Here you will find a detailed guide with tips and tricks: Matcha preparation - here's how
Can I prepare Matcha without a whisk?
Yes, a milk frother or a hand mixer can be an alternative. However, for the best result, we recommend a traditional Chasen.
How do I make a matcha latte?
Prepare the Matcha as usual and pour it with frothed plant-based or animal milk. Optionally, you can add a sweetener like maple syrup.
Which milk is best for Matcha latte?
Plant-based barista milk like oat or soy milk provides a creamy taste and froths particularly well. Of course, you can also use dairy milk.
Can I also prepare Matcha cold?
Prepare the Matcha as usual, but then add ice cubes. Matcha tastes especially good cold as an Iced Vanilla Matcha Latte or Iced Raspberry Matcha Latte. Matcha can also be excellently used in cold drinks like smoothies or Matcha mocktails. Simply stir Matcha with cold water and mix it with juice, adding more ingredients as desired.
Can I also use Matcha for cooking?
Yes, Matcha is versatile and can be used in recipes such as Matcha Spinach Tortillas, salad dressings or as a spice in savory dishes like Matcha Hummus or Lime Matcha Curry.
What creative desserts can I make with Matcha?
Matcha is excellent for Matcha cinnamon rolls, Matcha cookies, or Matcha tiramisu and adds a unique flavor note. In our recipe directory, you will find many great recipes, and more are constantly being added, so it's worth checking back! Here are all the recipes: All Matcha recipes.
